Formula Drift Singapore 2011

SPARK Motorsports' first major rubber-burning action for 2011 ended on a good note with a double victory for the team as two of its sponsored drivers, Daigo Saito and Ken Gushi won the champion and second runner-up placing. This propelled Team SPARK Motorsports to take home the inaugural Team Championship trophy with 183 points.

About 44 gung-ho drifters from Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and New Zealand participated in this competition, which took place at F1 Pit Building, right in the center of town. The four professional race drivers that represented Team SPARK Motorsports are Daigo Saito, Ken Gushi, Robbie Nishida and Charles Ng.

Saturday, 11 June 2011 was the qualifying day where all the race drivers were assessed based on their individual runs on track. The rainfall on the qualifying day threatens the performance of all the drivers. The four professional race drivers that represented Team SPARK Motorsports made it into the Top 31 placing. Malaysian driver, Tan Tat Wee was the top qualifier with a score of 73.7. He joined the rest of the 30 qualifying drivers in proceeding to the race held on Sunday, 12 June 2011.

On Sunday, the Top 31 drivers are required to do two laps in tandem, each taking a turn to lead and fight for the best score across two runs. Drivers were judged on their speed, style and ability to maintain their drift angle for as long as possible.

Formula Drift USA drifter, Ken Gushi from Team SPARK Motorsports beat Malaysian drifter, Ivan Lau from Team LTM Bridgestone and emerged as the second runner-up.

In the battle for the championship title, Team SPARK Motorsports’ Daigo Saito put on a good fight with Team M150 Overdrive's Saranon Pornpatanarak. Both drivers were aggressive in pitting their deft drift-driving skills against one another. Daigo Saito eventually won this battle and emerged as the champion.

During the autograph session, Team SPARK Motorsports' pit lane was swarmed with spectators and the media, all hoping to catch a glimpse of Daigo Saito, Ken Gushi, Robbie Nishida, Charles Ng and our hottie race queens. Many came from all over the world, just to catch them in action. One of them includes a professional photographer from Bangkok, Miss P. Saori, 24, who traveled from Thailand to catch her idol, Ken Gushi in tyre-shredding action.

Apart from all these race excitement and fun that we had at the pit lane during the autograph session, SPARK Motorsports took effort to do its part for charity once again. International professional race driver cum Formula Drift judge, Daijiro Yoshihara, was specially invited to perform a charity demo. With each donut performed by him, SPARK Motorsports will donate S$100 to the Japan Earthquake Relief funds. We are glad to be able to do our part for Japan.

SPARK Motorsports is extremely happy with the positive race results. We are sure that our future events would be even more exciting! So please do keep a lookout for our upcoming races in Year 2011!
